In this project you are asked to do two pieces of work: First, invent a suitable companion melody for the two short melodies in Example 47 below. Second, compose two melodies of between 8 and 10 bars in length, contrasting in character, and then compose a suitable companion melody for each. Choose whatever instrument you wish. You might consider partnerships between woodwind and tuned percussion. The added colour of untuned percussion could enhance the effect – if you are adventurous, this could even be a third part of the contrapuntal effect. You might want to allow one melodic line to start rather later than the other, so the listener can more easily pick out and follow the separate parts.
